Questions & Answers about sandbox cover
How do I clean and maintain a sandbox cover?
Most covers are made of materials, like Vinyl, HDPE and poured rubber, that will not 'soak' up water. These can be hosed down periodically (monthly) to remove dust and dirt to eliminate any foothold for mold and mildew growth. If any sticky matter like sap remains, a sponge, cloth or soft bristle brush can used and so can a few drops of mild soap (dish washing soap) can be used. Be sure to complete rinse off the soap residue and allow to dry before reuse.
During clearning, visually inspect the snaps, grommets or other fasteners, edge stitching and corners for signs of wear or broken stitches. Use of glue, or manual stitching can prolong the life of the cover for many months or years.

How do you secure a sandbox cover so it does not blow off?
Stainless steel snaps are by far the most popular and cost effective method to secure a cover on top of a sandbox.
There are many other methods that can be used if needed: Grommets, elastic hems, weight pockets, bungee cords, and velcro to name a few. Sometimes the sandbox walls are made of cement, cinder blocks or it’s a plastic container that isn't condusive for stud screws, so weight pockets or elastic hems will do the trick. Sometimes the top of the wall has a seat that overhangs the outside edge making snaps difficult to use, so bungee, elastic hems or weight pockets can be used. If the sandbox is flush with the surrounding ground, then grommets provide a way to use metal tent stakes to secure the cover.
(Answered by our BackyardCity.com Experts)Is a Mesh or Solid material better for a Sandbox cover?
The best material depends on your goal. Solid fabric usually preferred when you want maximum protection from rain because it blocks water and fine debris more effectively, while a mesh material is better when you want drainage and less water pooling on top of the cover.
CON of Solid Covers: This option does tend to keep the sand drier, but due to ground moisture it tends to create the perfect high humid micro environment under the cover where mold and mildew thrives. Mold and mildew and kids are not usually a good combination. The top of the cover will pool rain and sprinkler water and will usually need to be swept off before removing the cover to allow play.
PRO of Mesh Covers: Allows air movement and moisture to escape. It does not allow water to pool on top and does not promote mold and mildew growth. Mesh is a much better choice for your sandbox cover.
(Answered by our BackyardCity.com Experts)Will a sandbox cover keep cats and animals out?
Yes! This is the primary reason for a sandbox cover, preventing a local or feral turning it into an unsanitary little box. A properly fitted cover is usually the most effective at preventing cats, raccoons, and other animals from entering the sand and is will effectively deter access if it fits tightly and is secured well.

Sandbox Cover Benefits and Why a lid over the sand box is needed:
- Contamination Prevention: The primary purpose of a sandbox cover is to prevent contamination of the sand by leaves, dirt, animal droppings, or other debris. This helps maintain a clean and safe play environment for your children.
- Safety: Covering the sandbox when not in use prevents animals or insects from using the sandpit as a nesting or hiding spot, reducing the risk of encounters with potentially harmful creatures.
- Weather Protection: A sandbox cover provides protection against rain, helping to prevent the sand from becoming waterlogged or developing mold or mildew. It also minimizes the impact of the elements on the sand's quality.
- Extended Lifespan: By shielding the sand from contaminants and adverse weather conditions, a sandbox lid or cover can contribute to the extended lifespan of the sand, reducing the frequency of sand replacement.
- Time Savings: Covering and uncovering the sand box is a quick and simple process, saving time for parents or commercial caregivers who might otherwise need to sift or clean the sand frequently.
Typical Fabrics used for Sandbox Covers:
- Vinyl: Vinyl is a popular choice due to its water-resistant properties, durability and cost effectiveness. Solid vinyl Sandbox cover provides excellent protection against rain and is easy to keep clean.
- High Density Polyethylene or HDPE: Polyethylene is another weather-resistant material that is lightweight and durable. Most offer excellent UV resistance, making it suitable for prolonged exposure to sunlight.
- Mesh Fabric: Mesh covers allow for airflow, preventing mold or mildew growth while still protecting the sandbox from debris and animals. They are well suitable for areas with high humidity and rain.
- Canvas: Canvas covers offer a natural and breathable option. Some canvas may not be as water-resistant as some synthetic materials, they provide good protection against debris.
Ways to Secure Sand Box Covers
- Snaps: Stainless steel snaps have a female dome part that is attached to the cover and a male part that is screwed into the sandbox outside wall. They can be easily snapped on/off and secured around the sandbox frame, ensuring a tight and stable fit. One of the most popular choices.
- Grommets: Rustproof brass grommets can be installed around the perimeter of a sand box cover. They can be screwed in place, attached to hooks, elastic cords or stakes.
- Elastic Cords: Many sandbox covers come with built-in elastic cords or straps that can be stretched and secured around the edges of the sandbox. It is most effective when the sandbox has a protruding outside edge. This helps to keep the cover firmly in place.
- Drawstring: Covers with drawstrings around the perimeter can be tightened to ensure a snug fit. This is a common method for securing covers and preventing them from blowing away in the wind.
- Weights or Sandbags: Placing weights or sandbags along the edges of a Sandpit cover can provide additional anchoring, especially in windy conditions.
- Anchor Stakes: For covers with loops or grommets, anchor stakes can be used to secure the sandpit cover to the ground. This is particularly useful in areas prone to strong winds.
- Velcro: Some sandbox covers are equipped with Velcro straps that can be fastened around the sandbox's frame, offering a secure and adjustable closure.
- Rod Pockets: Sleeves are sewn into the sandbox cover's sides. It allows a pipe/rod to be inserted for either weight or to secure behind posts.
When selecting or designing a DIY sandbox cover, it's essential to consider the specific needs of the environment, the size and shape of the sandbox, and the ease of use for securing and removing the cover. A well-chosen cover enhances the overall safety and cleanliness of the sandbox, providing a hygienic and enjoyable play space for children.
Things to consider for a Custom or DIY Sandbox design
Mesh Sandbox Covers
Mesh Sandbox Covers
Mesh vinyl is the most popular. Water does not pool on top of a mesh sandbox cover and create mosquito breeding pools. It allows the sand to dry quickly to prevent mold and mildew buildup. It's cost is most economical. Commercial 95 is also a great HDPE mesh fabric for a sand box cover. Albeit it is more expensive, it is a more ruggedly built fabric and is perfect for Daycares, small schools, churches and most any higher traffic sandbox use.
Solid Covers for Sandboxes
Solid covers are good to help sheild the sand from rain. We now highly recommend that any solid vinyl or poured rubber covers have a drain hole grommet put in the middle of the cover to prevent water pooling on top. But we leave the final choice up to you.
Custom Sandbox Covers
Many DIY sandboxes take shapes that are not standard sized square or rectangles. Maybe they are triangle, hexagon, octagon or in the shape of a boat. It does not matter, we can fabricate nearly any size or shape cover. Many times we may require a "Template" to be supplied, so we can make a "Custom Template" for thos Odd shapes where just dimensions are not enough for us to be comfortable in making the sandbox cover and knowing it will fit correctly.
Securing the Sand Box Cover
Most sandbox covers we make are made with snaps, as they are the easiest to take off or put on quickly. We can also use grommets, or create weight pockets or rod pockets too. We can suggest a method that best suits your need.
Here's a personal story about our sandbox, that was bought for my 1st child, a girl, and later enjoyed by our 2nd girl. My wife was adamant about getting a cover due to several feral and/or outdoor cats in the neighborhood. She also wanted to make sure we got a solid cover, so the sand would be as "clean" & "dry" as possible for best play opportunities for our little girl. So I measured and ordered a solid cover. All was wonderful! Then the spring rains came. The rain pooled water on the cover, and the playtime in the sand was all but non-existant. I asked her why she didn't take our girl out there to play in the sandbox as much, and my little girl so did love playing in it. She said it was an annoyance for her to get rid of the water so she could take off the cover. Then she saw mosquito larvae in the pools and asked me if it was ok to get a mesh cover. She was still concerned about the sand getting wet with a mesh cover. I took off the solid cover after a big rain and showed her that the moisture was sucked up from ground water from underneath so mesh or solid did not make a difference having dry sand vs wet sand. We soon were proud owners of a mesh sandbox cover and sandbox play time increased tremendously. Sadly for me these are just memories as now my two girls have outgrown their sandbox, but maybe this story can help you decide better which sandbox type and material to choose for your kids. - Trey Collier
