Questions & Answers about Custom Sandbox Covers - Commercial 95

Q:

How do I clean and maintain a sandbox cover?

A:

Most covers are made of materials, like Vinyl, HDPE and poured rubber, that will not 'soak' up water. These can be hosed down periodically (monthly) to remove dust and dirt to eliminate any foothold for mold and mildew growth. If any sticky matter like sap remains, a sponge, cloth or soft bristle brush can used and so can a few drops of mild soap (dish washing soap) can be used. Be sure to complete rinse off the soap residue and allow to dry before reuse.

During clearning, visually inspect the snaps, grommets or other fasteners, edge stitching and corners for signs of wear or broken stitches. Use of glue, or manual stitching can prolong the life of the cover for many months or years.

Q:

How do you secure a sandbox cover so it does not blow off?

A:

Stainless steel snaps are by far the most popular and cost effective method to secure a cover on top of a sandbox.

There are many other methods that can be used if needed: Grommets, elastic hems, weight pockets, bungee cords, and velcro to name a few. Sometimes the sandbox walls are made of cement, cinder blocks or it's a plastic container that isn't condusive for stud screws, so weight pockets or elastic hems will do the trick. Sometimes the top of the wall has a seat that overhangs the outside edge making snaps difficult to use, so bungee, elastic hems or weight pockets can be used. If the sandbox is flush with the surrounding ground, then grommets provide a way to use metal tent stakes to secure the cover.

Q:

How much overlap or drop should a sandbox cover have?

A:

The overap or drop primary purpose is to attach the cover to the sandbox and prevent it from blowing away. It is usually attached with stainless steel snaps,

The best location for the snaps are on a verticle surface like the outside wall of the sandbox. The male 'stud' part of the snap is fixed to the wall. On a verticle surface where there is little chance that it will hurt small feet, knees or bums compared to having them mounted on a top horizontal surface.

The ideal length of the overlap/drop is usually dependent on how the sandbox is made. If the walls are made of one or more rows of a 3.5in wide material then 2 or 3 inch drop is perfect. The snap is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the edge. A 4 inch drop would put the snap location at the edge/seam of the 3.5in wide wall board and the stud screw will have little to hold it in place. The size will determine where the snap stud will be located and it should be into the center of the materal and not near its edges or seams. Only in very rare cases will a drop be needed longer than 3 inches.

Q:

Is a Mesh or Solid material better for a Sandbox cover?

A:

The best material depends on your goal. Solid fabric usually preferred when you want maximum protection from rain because it blocks water and fine debris more effectively, while a mesh material is better when you want drainage and less water pooling on top of the cover.

CON of Solid Covers: This option does tend to keep the sand drier, but due to ground moisture it tends to create the perfect high humid micro environment under the cover where mold and mildew thrives. Mold and mildew and kids are not usually a good combination. The top of the cover will pool rain and sprinkler water and will usually need to be swept off before removing the cover to allow play.

PRO of Mesh Covers: Allows air movement and moisture to escape. It does not allow water to pool on top and does not promote mold and mildew growth.

PRO of Solid Covers: For maximum protection from rain, debris, and animals, especially in high-traffic or commercial settings like daycares and preschools, a solid cover may be the stronger choice, keeping sand completely dry and ready for immediate use every time.

Q:

Will a sandbox cover keep cats and animals out?

A:

Yes! This is the primary reason for a sandbox cover, preventing a local or feral cat from turning it into an unsanitary little box. A properly fitted cover is usually the most effective at preventing cats, raccoons, and other animals from entering the sand and is will effectively deter access if it fits tightly and is secured well.

How to Measure Sandbox

The Commercial 95 material is the best alternative for your custom sandbox cover if you are looking for a light weight easy to handle sandbox cover. BackyardCity.com can make your sandbox cover to nearly any size that you may need. Only the best materials are used to make these covers, including the Commercial 95 fabric. We offer the Commercial 95 Custom made to fit almost any shape in a variety of colors. Keeping the sandbox area clean is important, with this material it is still able to get air and breath which will eliminate mold and mites to grow in the sand.

The Commercial 95 features 340 grams per square meter, high density polyethylene knitted fabric specially designed to breath. This state of the art material carries a 10 year warranty. It is unaffected by moisture and natural temperature extremes. And because the Commercial 95 fabric is knitted, not woven, it won't tear or fray. This material is NOT waterproof, it is knitted to allow water seepage thru the cover over a period of time. Pooling should not be a problem with this design in the fabric. Your choice of stainless steel snaps or grommets that are pre-attached into the tarp. These are also shown in the pictures below as well as other common fastening methods, featurers or options.

Sandbox Cover Example - Suppose you have a 60"x72" sandbox (measured outside edge to outside edge) with 4x4 posts in each corner and you want it to drop down the outside of the sandbox wall 3 inches:  The finished cover will be 66" x 78" with 8-1/2" square cutouts on each corner.   The 8-1/2" cutout is enough to accommodate the 3" drop,  1-1/2" for the sandbox wall which is usually made of a 2x? piece of wood (We will need the width of the supporting boards) and 4" for the post.   We know that a 4"x4" post is actually 3.5"x3.5", but the extra 1/2" gives you a little wiggle room.

All custom sandbox covers are made to your specifications. Therefore all sales are final. No refunds or returns can, or will, be accepted
