How long with the rope last?
Depending on how well it is taken care of and your climate, a rope hammock product should last 8-15 years. How long your hammock will last is directly related to a number of factors including; amount of use, environmental conditions, frequency of care and cleaning, and quality of storage when not in use. In general, we recommend that you store your hammock in a cool dry place whenever its is not in use (don't just leave it hanging year round). When you are using it, make sure that you check the ropes periodically for mildew growth and dirt. If you find some, clean the hammock as described in the instructions you received with the hammock (use a mild soapy solution only - no bleach). Finally, make sure you use the hammock as its intended - don't put too much weight in it and don't let the hammock swing wildly putting additional stress on the rope. If you follow these simple instructions, your hammock should provide several years of relaxing comfort.
How thick is the rope?
The rope is 7/32" thick. The thickest in the industry.
My hammock is leaning to one side. Is it defective?
No! This is typical of new hammocks. The hammock's rope will stretch and the hammock will begin to lay flat after use.
What is the difference between hammocks with spreader bars and hammocks without spreader bars?
Spreader Bars "spread" the hammock weave open so that the full width of the hammock is easily accessible. One spreader bar is located at each end of the hammock bed. The spreader bars help to keep the hammock bed flat when you are lying in the hammock. Thus it is easier to get into and out of hammocks with spreader bars.
By contrast, hammocks without spreader bars more closely conform to the contours of your body while lying in them. For this reason, many people feel they are more comfortable than hammocks with spreader bars. However, these hammocks typically must be hung from higher supports to allow for the additional droop in the hammock. Additionally, some people may have more difficulty getting into and out of hammocks without spreaders.
What kind of wood is used in the Hammocks?
White oak! Other hardwoods, and "mystery woods", are just not as hard and durable. Many of the original sailing vessals that first saw these shores were constructed of white oak!
What's the best rope for a hammock?
Spun Polyester is the best choice. It is a very soft rope, often mistaken for cotton, it is highly resistant to mildew, wear and tear, and direct sun. It is the most comfortable and durable rope offered, also available in dyed colors.
Cotton... A nice natural fiber, but this also makes it much more likely to be affected by mildew and wear and tear. Although used years ago prior to availablity of high quality polyester rope, it has lost popularity in recent years. It will strech more than nylon or polyester.
Why are the spreader or strecher bars bent?
Comfort and Safety! Its an old tradition that is all but lost. Bending the spreaders provides for a deeper pocket and minimizes the "Flip Out" tendacies of non-bent spreader hammocks.
