Considering safety when planning and constructing\u00a0new backyard playground equipment<\/a>\u00a0is crucial, but just as important is considering safety while the kids are engaged\u00a0in active play on that well-designed and well-constructed equipment.\u00a0\u00a0Kids just want to have fun, but sometimes that fun can have some hidden dangers about which parents and caregivers should be aware.<\/p>\n

Did you know that bike helmets, when worn on playground equipment, can pose a serious danger to kids?\u00a0 Bike helmets cannot pass through some\u00a0spaces and children can easily\u00a0become trapped.\u00a0\u00a0 Additionally, strangulation by the helmet’s chinstrap is a potential danger.<\/p>\n

Did you know that ropes, jump ropes, clothes lines, or pet leashes should never be attached to playground equipment because they can be a strangulation hazard?\u00a0 Even the drawstring found in hooded sweatshirts can cause strangulation if a child on a swing set becomes entangled by it.<\/p>\n

While a responsible parent or other adult should always\u00a0be around\u00a0to supervise kids who play on the backyard swing set, it’s also important to empower\u00a0kids by sharing this information with them.\u00a0 Parents should help kids understand that\u00a0seemingly harmless items\u00a0like bike helmets, jump ropes, pet leashes, etc.\u00a0should never make their way onto\u00a0any\u00a0swing set or other playground equipment.\u00a0 No gory details necessary…just let them know it’s not safe, so it’s not\u00a0ok.<\/p>\n
