{"id":569,"date":"2009-12-21T21:48:35","date_gmt":"2009-12-21T21:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/backyardcity.wordpress.com\/?p=569"},"modified":"2013-08-09T16:46:09","modified_gmt":"2013-08-09T21:46:09","slug":"cooking-in-a-chiminea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.backyardcity.com\/Outdoor-Patio-Blog\/cooking-in-a-chiminea\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooking in a chiminea?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/backyardcity.com\/Images\/TBR\/Sun-Ray-Large-charcoal.jpg?resize=256%2C297\" width=\"256\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fun fire&#8230; campfires, bonfires, and that long gone but lovingly remembered autumn ritual of leaf burning by the curbside&#8230; can still be yours through the noble chiminea,\u00a0 the popular outdoor potbelly fireplace.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.backyardcity.com\/Chimenea-Outdoor-Fireplaces.htm\">Chimineas<\/a>\u00a0are not care-free devices.\u00a0 They need a certain amount of ongoing maintenance to guarantee the longest life.\u00a0 Hopefully, you will read this before you buy one so that you can make an informed purchase.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What is a chiminea?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Originating in Mexico in the 17th century, the original chimineas were used to bake bread.\u00a0 As with the originals, modern chimineas are handmade from raw, wet clay,\u00a0 giving each chiminea its own personality.\u00a0 They are actually made from two pieces&#8230; the chimney or &#8220;stack&#8221; made separately from the wood chamber or &#8220;base&#8221;.\u00a0 After a short period of air drying, they are joined together to make a seemingly seamless fireplace!<\/p>\n<p>The formed <a title=\"chiminea\" href=\"http:\/\/www.backyardcity.com\/Chimenea-Outdoor-Fireplaces.htm\" target=\"_blank\">chiminea<\/a> is allowed to air dry for a few more days and then is baked in a 900+\u00a0 degree kiln.\u00a0 Allowing enough drying time as important since chimineas placed into the kiln while too wet will invariably crack.\u00a0 After thorough cooling, the outside is painted to give a rustic-looking, almost antique appearance.\u00a0 (Personally, I like the some of the new styles that are made of cast iron because they are resistant to chips, cracks and fading.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can be burned in a chiminea?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The chiminea is primarily a wood-burning stove.\u00a0 Hard woods burn best and produce the least amount of sparks.\u00a0 Some chiminea users who cook in their chimineas burn charcoal.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0One safe way is to first burn some hard wood to form wood coals, which in turn are hot enough to light the charcoal.\u00a0 You could also use self-lighting charcoal.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Chimineas are for outdoor use only! <\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Fun fire&#8230; campfires, bonfires, and that long gone but lovingly remembered autumn ritual of leaf burning by the curbside&#8230; can still be yours through the noble chiminea,\u00a0 the popular outdoor potbelly fireplace.
