Shopping on “Black Friday” — a.k.a. the wild and crazy\u00a0day of shopping\u00a0following Thanksgiving — is not everyone’s idea of a good time.\u00a0 Luckily,\u00a0“Cyber Monday” exists for folks like me who prefer not to\u00a0venture out\u00a0to fight traffic, parking\u00a0 lots,\u00a0and frenzied crowds.\u00a0\u00a0Shoppers stay home on Cyber Monday —\u00a0the first Monday following Thanksgiving —\u00a0and shop great deals online in their jammies.\u00a0 That’s more like it.<\/p>\n

According to Wikipedia, online shoppers spent $887 million on Cyber Monday in 2009.\u00a0 That’s a lot of holiday gift buying, but how many of those gifts were even remotely meaningful or sustainable?\u00a0 This question, posed by the Nature Conservancy, prompted a campaign to turn Cyber Monday into “Green Gift Monday<\/a>.”\u00a0 The goal of\"bows,gifts,packages,presents,ribbons,special Green Gift Monday is to encourage online shoppers to put a little more thought into\u00a0choosing gifts\u00a0that are environmentally responsible.\u00a0 Not only does this give shoppers the opportunity to do something positive with their money, it also makes\u00a0gifts more meaningful to recipients.<\/p>\n

Whether Green Gift Monday will catch on with online shoppers is hard to\u00a0say.\u00a0\u00a0But, if even\u00a0some portion of Cyber Monday shoppers decide to put more thought into their purchases and choose environmentally friendly gifts<\/a>, then the Nature Conservancy’s campaign could still be considered a success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
